“Hear Our Voices” – My Mobility Vision Calls for Feedback to Build Better P-Hailing Regulations

Kuala Lumpur, [21st Jan 2025] – My Mobility Vision commends the Malaysian government for its continuous efforts to safeguard the safety and social security of gig workers, especially p-hailing riders. The government’s move in 2019 to recognize and regulate the p-hailing industry was a transformative step, turning it into a more structured and professional sector.

However, we understand that in any fast-growing industry, challenges will arise. As the sector evolves, it is crucial to ensure that regulations not only protect workers’ safety but also do not hinder the innovation that drives the gig economy’s growth.

Transforming the P-Hailing Industry

The government has achieved significant milestones, including:

  • Introducing new laws through amendments to the Land Public Transport Act and Road Transport Act.
  • Providing social protection through SOCSO, with over 315,000 riders now covered under the social security scheme.
  • Implementing safety initiatives such as vehicle inspections and mandatory personal accident insurance.

With over 60,000 p-hailing riders across the country, the industry has also created flexible job opportunities for young people and those seeking additional income.

However, we cannot ignore the challenges that persist. Studies show that 70% of p-hailing riders violate traffic laws during deliveries. This highlights the need for new, more practical and effective approaches.

My Mobility Vision’s Call for Collaboration and Dialogue

Moving forward, My Mobility Vision calls for:

  1. All p-hailing platforms – such as Grab, Foodpanda, and others – to share their concerns and recommendations with us. Your voice is crucial to ensure that future regulations are fair and practical.
  2. The government to support our efforts to host a roundtable discussion. This session aims to hear from all stakeholders – riders, platforms, and policymakers – so we can develop regulations that benefit everyone.

We believe that only through open dialogue and collaboration can we create a safer and more sustainable future for this industry.

Strengthening the Future of the Gig Economy

Since its legalization in 2019, the p-hailing sector has grown into a key contributor to Malaysia’s economy. With the gig workforce growing by 25% over the past decade, we must ensure that the regulations introduced continue to support innovation, safety, and the development of this sector.

My Mobility Vision is committed to playing an active role as a bridge between the government, platforms, and gig workers. This upcoming roundtable discussion is an important step in listening to and uniting all voices as we move forward.

Let’s Shape the Future Together

To all industry players, riders, and Malaysians, we invite you to join us in this effort. Share your thoughts, and together, we can create a p-hailing ecosystem that is safer, more innovative, and sustainable for the long term.
